Replica of a Pegasos/Ram coin that was minted during the reign of Artemisia I (not to scale)
I am providing this enlarged (x4) replica of a coin that I believe was minted by Artemisia I of Caria as a memento for her and the empowerment she represents.
Numismatists have dated that coin as having been minted in Halikarnassos between 500-480 BC. Artemisia’s reign was likely 496 to 479 BC. We don’t know the actual name of her husband, only that he ruled between her father and her. I believe that the “A” beneath the the goat’s mouth is a monogram, so unless her husband’s name began with an A, then it makes it almost certain that she minted the original coin.
See the velvet coin pouch, coin capsule, and display easel for ways to display and store this coin.
These are the available details for the original coin:
Artemisia I*: 496-479 BC. Silver Obol, minted in Halikarnassos, 7mm diameter, 0.71g.
Obverse: Pegasos forepart left charging / Reverse: Goat forepart left, below goat’s mouth, all within incuse circle.
